FREEPORT AREA, California — Sacramento’s continuing River Parkway planning has an important geographic connection to the Freeport Regional Water Authority intake on the Sacramento River. A city public-works project page identifies the levee top south of Aquapher Way toward that intake facility as public property, while noting that the riverfront farther north includes privately owned stretches.
What the parkway project would add
The city is designing an accessible levee-top trail through the Pocket neighborhood, between Garcia Bend Park and Zacharias Park, with ramps, safer connections and a neighborhood safety plan. Design and environmental review remain under way, and construction depends on approvals and financing. The planned trail is not a newly completed trail through Freeport village.
City staff explain that the levee-top corridor has a patchwork of ownership and easements. Some private parcels allow flood-control or maintenance access without allowing public passage. A missing fence is not proof that a person has the right to walk there. Residents should use established public access points and respect posted restrictions.
How to participate
Public input is being sought on potential access ramps, operations, safety and impacts to nearby property. The city lists SacRiverParkway@CityofSacramento.org and 916-808-1705 for project questions.
For Freeport residents, the intake-area reference is a useful landmark when reading the city map, but it should not be confused with any separate proposal for a waterside park immediately at Freeport Bridge.
